Uh-oh
Help - I have lead water service lines!
What is it?
Lead (Pb) is a metal, used often in building construction, bullets,
Where does it come from?
Many Canadian cities have lead service lines leading to homes, especially in older parts of the city. 52% of Toronto homes tested between July and October in 2009 tested positive for lead levels exceeding the provincial standard of 10 ppb (parts per billion).
What are the associated risks/issues?
Lead can seriously harm the intellectual and behavioural development of infants, children, and unborn children, who are particularly vulnerable to ingesting and absorbing the heavy metal. Lead causes severely debilitating effects on the nervous system. Long-term exposure also causes severe damage to the brain and kidneys. It has also been linked to miscarriages and increases in blood pressure.
