Uh-oh
My water tastes metallic!/My water has a reddish/orange colour and stains everything reddish-brown!
What is it?
Iron (Fe) is a metal and the fourth most common element in our planet's crust.
Where does it come from?
Iron (Fe) in the water is a result of natural deposits. When it rains, the water infiltrates the soil and dissolves iron, causing it to seep into aquifers. These aquifers serve as sources of groundwater for wells, making iron a common problem in areas where well water is the primary supply.
What are the associated risks/issues?
Taste: Iron creates a bitter taste in water, and when combined with tea and other beverages it produces an inky, black appearance, and a harsh taste. Stains: Even low concentrations of iron in the water will leave hard-to- remove stains appliances that come into contact with water, dishes, and on laundry, among other things. Iron bacteria: When bacteria are present, they use the iron, leaving behind a reddish brown or yellow slime that can clog plumbing, and release an offensive odour.
