Uh-oh
My water gives off a bleach-like odour.
What is it?
Chlorine (Cl2) is a gas, commonly used as:- a disinfectant, mainly for water, e.g. in swimming pools and spas
- an oxidising agent for organic matter, iron, etc.
- (in concentrated form) a heavy-duty cleaning product (bleach).
Where does it come from?
The city adds chlorine to the municipal water supply with the purpose of disinfecting the water. Although exposure to chlorine in a larger quantity can be fatal, the amount in our city water (at least according to the government) is harmless.
What are the associated risks/issues?
Chlorine itself is a known carcinogen. In addition, when added to the water supply, it allows for the creation of byproducts, the most harmful of which are VOCs and THMs. These byproducts are associated with cancer risks, as well as respiratory, allergic, or immune effects.
